This book is a journey into the past: a chronicle of the odyssey of an expedition of soldiers, women and children who left their homes in Spain to found a New World in Chile. That remote province of the Spanish empire urgently needed saviours so as not to fall to the fiercest warriors of the Americas.
The voyage, which began in 1573 and ended in 1576, was made by young people who turned their quiet lives upside down by embarking on a mission that would make them face physical and mental hardship: tiny ships, scarce food, storms, forced confinement and cruel diseases.
Although it may read like one, it is not fiction: it is built on primary documents preserved in the Archivo General de Indias, which now come to light in this original account by Cristián Cofré León.
The saviours of the Kingdom of Chile left their mark, and their legacy lives on today in their millions of descendants, among whom, perhaps, are you.
